HVAC Specialist

(SKILLED TRADE SPECIALIST  I - 7130)
(SKILLED TRADE SPECIALIST II- 4804)

SALARY: 
Level (I)  $30,200 -- $47,420                                     
Level (II) $32,091 -- $50,563       (Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis)

DESCRIPTION:   Employees perform experienced (I) and journey (II) level heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) work for the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT).  Employees selected for these positions will independently perform skilled installation, connection, maintenance, and repair work in compliance with all applicable local, State and Federal regulations and standard practices governing the HVAC trade.  Responsibilities include installing, repairing, and maintaining heating and air conditioning equipment to include: boilers, including gas and oil fired and hot water and steam, electric furnaces, control system fans, filters, heat radiation units, motors, burners, piping, relays, gauges, valves, steam panels, switches, wiring, air conditioning and cooling equipment such as air handling units, cooling and condensing evaporators, belts, hoses, bearings, coils, filters, compressors, dampers, pressure gauges, meters, thermostats, and fans.  Additional duties include, but are not limited to, checking refrigerant pressure, using gauges and meters, correcting amount of refrigerant into unit charge equipment and lubricating all HVAC equipment and moveable parts.  The current vacancy is a Skilled Trade Specialist II position (nighttime position) located at the Maryland Port Administration (MPA).  However, the resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill any future vacancies for HVAC Specialists within MDOT.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
EXPERIENCE: Three (I) or four years (II) of experience in the HVAC trade.

Notes:
1.   Additional work experience in the HVAC trade may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.                                          
2.   A certificate from a vocational technical school in the HVAC trade may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATES, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Candidates appointed to positions in these classifications are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles.  Employees are required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.  All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.
2. During the probationary period, employees may be required to obtain and maintain a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland, depending on the type of equipment operated.
3. The employing administration may require employees to satisfy its agency training and certification program requirements to obtain and maintain permanent status in this classification.
4. The Maryland Port Administration requires that an offer of employment be made contingent upon the employee successfully passing a medical physical and obtaining a valid US DOT Medical Card (or MVA Waiver) at the time of the pre-employment physical.
