THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL RECRUITMENT LIMITED TO ALL QUALIFIED EMPLOYEES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND CORRECTIONAL SERVICES.

SALARY: $43,725 - $69,999

POSITION DUTIES: A Correctional Officer Captain is one of three levels of managerial work involving the custody, security and control of adult inmates confined in a correctional facility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or GED certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission Regulation,

AND

Two years of experience supervising the work of correctional officers in the custody and security of adult inmates.

 

NOTES:

1. The above educational requirement is set by the Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Article 41, Section 4-301.

2. Additional education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of sixty (60) credit hours for one year of the required experience provided that a minimum of 15 credit hours are in the field of criminal justice or related social sciences.

3. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period (Article 41, Section 4-301). Selection standards for correctional officer training are listed in detail in the Core of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:

*  U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
*  Must be at least 18 years of age
*  A completed background investigation
*  Oral interview
*  Physical examination


4. Employees in this classification will be required to bear firearms, and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.

5. Employees are subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, must have a telephone at their place of residence.

6. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 06.01.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

7. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties requiring the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

8. Employees in this classification may be required to operate large vans for transportation of inmates. Employees assigned these duties will be required to acquire a Class C Maryland driver’s license.

EXAMINATION: Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list for this classification. Appointing authorities will use the list for promotional appointments. The list will be established for an initial period of three years and may be extended.

Qualifications: You must possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job- Verification will be completed by the appointing authority. If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process. Permanent State employees may also complete necessary experience requirements within six months of the date of an examination. Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week. You must include on your application the time you spent in such activity. You must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act to be hired in the position for which you apply.

Eligibility: Applicants will be notified when and where to appear for written, oral or demonstration examinations. Some examinations may consist of an evaluation of relevant training and experience. If further information is needed, notice will be sent to the candidate. Candidates who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the classification for which they apply, will not receive a ranking and their name will not appear on the eligible list.
