Direct Care Assistant II

TITLE:   DIRECT CARE ASSISTANT II    (4003) 
   
Starting Salary Negociable

CLOSING DATE:  OPEN & CONTINUOUS

DESCRIPTION:  Direct Care Assistant II is the full performance level of work assisting in the care, treatment, habilitation or rehabilitation of mentally ill patients, aged or physically ill patients, or developmentally disabled clients who are residents of various State treatment facilities or community based programs.  Employees in this classification do not have supervisory responsibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalence certificate.

EXPERIENCE:  Two years of experience in patient/client direct care work.

NOTES:

1. Applicants may substitute experience in patient/client direct care for the required education on a year-for-year basis for up to four years of the required education.
2. Persons employed in the classifications of Direct Care Worker I-V or Direct Care Aide I-IV prior to July 1, 1989 will be considered qualified under the educational requirements of this specification.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATES:

1.  Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current certificate as a Nursing Assistant from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 OR have successfully completed a Board of Nursing approved nursing assistant training program and received certification as a Nursing Assistant from the Board of Nursing within sixty days from date of hire prior to performing delegated nursing tasks.
2. Persons appointed to positions in facilities that provide long term care for the aged may be required to possess or obtain a Geriatric Aide certificate.
3. Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland, and their driving records will be subject to investigation.
4. Employees in some positions may be required to operate vehicles which require a Class "C" motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate motor vehicle operator's license.   
5. Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE CLASSIFICATION:

1. Persons appointed to a position in this classification without certification as a Nursing Assistant must successfully complete a Board of Nursing approved nursing assistant training program and receive certification as a Nursing Assistant within sixty days from date of hire prior to performing delegated nursing tasks.  Appointees failing to successfully complete this requirement will not be retained in these positions.
2. Applicants may be given a medical examination and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the work required of the position prior to appointment.
3. Employees in this classification must have successfully completed a direct care training course or examination approved by the hiring facility prior to permanent appointment to a position in this classification.
4. Due to the nature of the work, a criminal conviction record may be a bar to employment in this classification.  If a criminal conviction record is determined to be job related, the applicant may not be selected.  If a background investigation determines that a criminal conviction record is job-related, permanent appointment to the position may not be made.
5. Persons appointed to positions in this classification will be required to provide the facility with a telephone number where they can be reached.
6. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
