This special search feature is very easy to use.  Enter the class code for the best results.  The following tips will help you understand how this search feature works:

  • Job Specifications are NOT the same as bulletins or job announcements.   A job specification is a description of a class of similar jobs in State service.   The fact that you can find a job specification does NOT mean that there are any current job opportunities in that class.   To get information on what jobs are currently being recruited for, please go to the "Current Recruitments" page on our web site.
  • The most efficient way to search for a specific job class is by searching for its Class Code. Each job class is assigned a 4 digit number called a “Class Code”.   The class code is unique to each job class.   If you know the right code for a job class, searching for it will yield one document.  You won't have to look at a long list of documents to find the right one.
  • If you need to look up the Class Code or salary for a job, you can view job class titles alphabetically in the Salary Plan, which also has salary, pay grade and service information.   The Salary Plan contains the correct official job title. Some job titles include abbreviations.   If you search for a job specification that has abbreviated words in its title, you should use those abbreviations, as they are in the salary plan, in your search.
  • You can search for job specifications based on words in the job class title or the text of the job specification (including minimum qualifications).   Those searches will find all specifications that contain those words.   If you search for commonly used words like “supervisor” or a minimum qualification like “1 year of experience”, the search may return very many documents.   You will get the best results by searching on words that are specific to a small number of jobs.
  • The official job class title that appears on specifications may NOT be the same as an informal or functional name that is used in a state facility.   Informal names can vary from place to place or may not be used at all in a given facility.    For that reason, the specification only shows the official job class title.   If you are going to search for a specification by name, you should use the official job class title.  Searching for informal names may return either no results or incorrect results.
  • Job specifications for other personnel systems such as Transportation, Judiciary, and the University of Maryland are not available here.
  • Please be aware that the Search feature that appears on our web site banner is different from this Search for Job Specs.   The Job Specs Search only looks for job specifications.  Conversely, the Search box that appears in the upper right corner of many pages searches ALL documents on our web site including job specifications.
  • Job Specifications are published as Micorosft Word documents.
