Work Location/Address:The job shall be performed at the location directed by the employer. The assigned work location for this position is Maryland Judicial Center 187 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis, MD 21401. The incumbent is required to report to work at that location pursuant to their work schedule unless allowed or directed to work at a different location for job-related reasons, at the sole discretion and authority of the Judiciary. Such alternate locations may include, but not be limited to: any court location or Judiciary facility within the state; any non-Judiciary facility, either within or outside the state, at which the incumbent is required to attend a conference, meeting, proceeding, training, or for other reasons; or, if allowed to telework by the Judiciary, an approved remote telework site.


Purpose of Role: The Finance Assistant I (Accounts Payable-AP) position performs a review of invoices to ensure compliance with the policies of the General Accounting Division (GAD), Annotated Code of Maryland, Judiciary Fiscal Policies, Department of Procurement, Contracts, & Grant Administration (DPCGA), Court Interpreter Program (CIP), and travel policy guidelines. Additionally, the Finance Assistant identifies, researches, and resolves account discrepancies for purchase orders, invoices, and vendors. This position will perform data entry for all related transactions using the GEARS (Judiciary accounting system of record) and FMIS (State of Maryland accounting system of record), along with verifying and requesting changes, where required, for vendor information.  All functions should be performed while providing excellent customer service and support for internal and external stakeholders.

Education:  High School or GED

Experience:  One (1) year of fiscal accounting experience to include reconciling data and system-to-system information.  

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of General Accounting Division's (GAD) and Judiciary's policies and procedures.
  • Experience with using Microsoft Office Suite applications including Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook, in a professional environment.
  • Strong attention to detail resulting in an accurate work product.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations when applying policies, regulations, and accounting laws, as required.
  • Exceptional customer service skills when communicating with internal and external stakeholders, including AOC management, court personnel, and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate self-leading behavior including working within prescribed time constraints to meet deadlines and keeping Supervisor/Lead Worker apprised of any impediments to work progress.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas both in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to identify methods to improve efficiency by recommending alternative or new approaches.
  • Ability to perform actual to budget reconciliations of accounting data, identify any discrepancies, and create/research how to resolve the issues.
